This invited competition entry for the New Museum provides flexible exhibition space for a range of uses: a video viewing area, computer area with internet access, resource and information area, event specific public programs (lectures, panels, and seminars), and a gallery to showcase new work.Leaving vertical surfaces fully available for projection, the proposed design makes use of horizontal surfaces to create a soft environment in which visitors can comfortably view multi-media information on monitors or projections. The floor material deforms to shape internally illuminated “dunes†that provide seating and a low level ambient light-scape. The dunes are conceived of as a modular system, allowing them to be reconfigured in response to the needs of specific installations, and a “web-bed†accommodates multiple body postures and creates a social space for the normally private activity of internet browsing.
